Discussion Questions

  1. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus knew that the women and some of the disciples had witnessed the empty tomb and had heard of the angelic testimony that Jesus was alive. Why then were they still so sad?

  2. What is the danger of both “selective listening” and believing in “partial truth” when it comes to the Word of God?  Do you do this today?  Explain.

  3. How does Jesus respond to the two disciples’ brokenhearted disillusionment and sadness due to their lack of understanding?  What does Jesus’ response teach us about His patience when we are fearful, hopeless, and filled with doubt?

  4. When we struggle with doubt and fear, we often hope and pray that Jesus would miraculously pull us out of our tribulations and make all things right.  However, what do we learn from our passage about how Jesus helps His disciples in their difficult times of need?

  5. Why is a deeper, more complete understanding of God’s word the better solution to our problems than simply making the problems go away?  Do you believe this is true? If so, what do you need to do in order to grow in your understanding of the Word of God?
